    Understanding Behavior Styles Can Turn Conflict into Growth

    For the past two semesters, I’ve been part of the Highlands College Leadership Institute, and if I’m honest, I’ve often felt like an imposter. Leadership hasn’t always come naturally to me. Speaking of understanding behavior styles, I know I tend to thrive in supportive roles rather than taking center stage. According to the DiSC personality assessment, my style is SC-calm, conscientious, and supportive. That means I avoid the spotlight and steer clear of conflict when I can.

    But here’s the twist: this very discomfort has become a space for deep growth.

    Through both Highlands College and my professional work with Horizon Point, I’ve been diving into conflict resolution. It turns out, understanding personality styles-not just our own, but others too, can dramatically shift how we handle disagreements in the workplace.

    At Highlands, Chris and Sophie Corder from Designed for Unity have been helping us explore how our DiSC styles shape our approach to conflict. They draw from Robert A. Rohm’s powerful framework in The Ultimate Discovery System, which teaches how understanding behavior styles can unlock harmony at work.

    Here’s what I’ve learned-and why it matters.

    The Four DiSC Styles: How They Handle Conflict Differently

    (Note: There are many models for understanding behavior styles, and we recommend using more than one to better understand ourselves and others. This is simply one tool we like.)

    According to Rohm, people tend to operate within four key behavioral types:

    • Dominant (D): Assertive, results-focused, and direct. In conflict, they can seem intense or confrontational. To resolve issues, speak to their need for efficiency and solutions.
    • Influential (I): Outgoing, optimistic, and persuasive. These people might avoid tough conversations, so approach them with empathy and affirm their ideas.
    • Steady (S): Calm, patient, and loyal. They value peace and can shy away from conflict. Give them reassurance and plenty of time to process.
    • Conscientious (C): Precise, logical, and detail-oriented. They’ll want facts, not feelings. Offer clear data and structured solutions.

    Know Thyself: The Power of Self-Awareness in Conflict

    Understanding others is key-but knowing yourself might be even more important.

    • What triggers your frustration?
    • How do you respond under pressure?
    • Do you tend to avoid conflict or rush to solve it?

    By becoming aware of your own behavioral style, you can better regulate your reactions and navigate conflict more intentionally.

    Communication Tips for Resolving Conflict Effectively

    Conflict can either divide teams or deepen trust. The difference often comes down to how we communicate.

    Here are some key strategies from The Ultimate Discovery System:

    • Listen actively. Before offering solutions, seek to truly understand the other person’s point of view.
    • Tailor your communication. Match your tone and approach to the other person’s DiSC style for better connection.
    • Focus on solutions. Keep the conversation future-focused instead of rehashing problems.

    Collaboration > Competition: Shift the Workplace Mindset

    One of Rohm’s most valuable insights? Conflict resolution isn’t about winning. It’s about understanding and collaborating. Teams function best when they embrace diverse styles and strengths, working together instead of pulling in different directions.

    When we honor different perspectives and communicate with intention, conflict becomes a tool for progress, not a threat to it.

    Early in my recovery, there was a lady who spoke these beautiful words of truth into my life, “A grateful heart never relapses.” I’ve found over the last 9 years since then that in any area of life where I am disturbed or there is disorder, I can ask myself, am I showing gratitude?     My Six-Week Soul Sabbath

    When you think of a sabbatical from work, what comes to mind? I took a few minutes to write the first words that came to my mind. They were: breather, time off, soul rest, work-life balance and creative restoration.  As the newest member of the Horizon Point team, I was not as familiar with the term sabbatical like the rest of the ladies. 

    Rumor has it that in 2021 everyone was on Mary Ila’s back porch in a Monthly Mingle meeting, distracted, busy and burned out. A couple of our team members had been to the hospital with chest pains, and it was tangible how deeply everyone needed a “soul sabbath”. The next item on the agenda was sabbaticals for everyone. That meant 6 weeks of paid time off for mental, physical and spiritual restoration. The idea was that when everyone was full, they would be able to dedicate their best selves to the mission. Thus, the Horizon Point sabbatical was born.

    This year, for our second quarterly planning meeting, “Sabbaticals” was on the agenda. Apparently, everyone on the team had been busy juggling too many balls and the subject was brought up before we even got to it. Not being familiar with the art of sabbaticals, I had loads of questions. “So, we get paid for 6 weeks? You don’t check your emails? What about Insighlty-the CRM we use for our tasks? Are you sure?” Everyone on the team assured me that it was a wonderful experience and that it would be well worth it. So, I blocked off November 1-December 16th and as if I could read my own fortune, forecasted the most timely sabbatical I didn’t even know that I needed.

    You see, 8 weeks ago, I found out that I am expecting my second child. My husband and I had prayed for this baby, but I knew before trying that historically, pregnancy has not always been the easiest experience for me. Add in coming off anti depressants in July and the beginning of the perfect hormonal storm was brewed. Things that normally are a challenge or are exciting for me have invoked fear, and I could feel deep inside that I needed to be still. The next quote is from Mary Ila’s blog, The Surgeon General’s Warning and Professional Development.

    A week or so after the conversation with the pregnancy announcement, we have our monthly one-on-one. We talk through a lot of client work and potential work. It is kind of hectic. We have to call another team member in at one point to talk through an execution plan for a new client. 

    And as we usually do in one-on-ones, we spend some time talking about her professional development within the context of her needs and the company’s needs. 

    I can tell she is concerned about taking on too much during this season of her life where a new child will enter and in her current state where she just doesn’t feel good and she never knows when that may or may not hit. Thus are the joys of growing a human being inside you. 

    I think out loud and I can tell my thinking out loud may be overwhelming her. I even sometimes overwhelm myself with it.  

    So, I stop. I ask her to think about one thing she wants to grow in professionally. Just one.  I can tell she doesn’t want to stall her learning and growth, and she says as much, but she also wants some grace as she navigates what looks like a very different season coming up for her.  

    I don’t want her to stop learning and growing. I want her to continue to grow in her confidence and skills where she can continue to add value to the organization.  But I know she won’t do either of these things if she is overwhelmed. 

    I don’t think Mary Ila knew the impact that reading that in black and white had on me. During that meeting we discussed juggling too many balls but also the fact that there are bouncy balls and there are glass balls. Bouncy balls like professional development will do that just-bounce, but the glass balls like mental health are a little less resilient. So on my six week “Soul Sabbath” I plan to rest. Not to lay down (although that may be on the agenda too) but to rest my mind. To be still and to know. After all, God’s track record in my life is GOOD.

    Who cares about Professional Development? Horizon Point does!

    This week kicks off a brand-new series here at The Point Blog. The Fall brings a new school year and with that, all things Professional Development. Some would consider this topic a snooze fest, but if it is tailored to an individual’s needs and desires for career growth, it can be one of the most exciting things that you get to do! Mary Ila supports our interests by meeting with us for monthly one on ones and asks us what we would like to be doing and the best way that the company can support our future goals. We also discuss our opportunities for Professional Development as a team when we meet at our Monthly Mingles.

    In my own journey of leadership development and career growth, I ventured out and started a new class last week. The class is Highlands College Leadership Institute. It will meet for an hour on Tuesday nights for 4 semesters, and the BEST part of it all? Horizon Point is investing in me to do it. I could not be more interested in the content that I’m learning, and I cannot wait to take back what I have learned about to our team for us to implement what I’ve been taught. That’s the beauty of Professional Development done the right way. It adds value!

    Jillian on our team has been sharing all about ATD24 and her experience at Recharge Your Soul, their annual Expo. In one of her recent blogs she shares…

    The theme for ATD24 was Recharge Your Soul. I absolutely felt recharged when I left, so much that I couldn’t stop talking about it (still can’t). 

    Jillian’s experience and excitement about the things that she learned inspired the rest of us at our Mingle when she handed out cards from different vendors and shared her stories. Not only is Mary Ila adding value to us individually, but as a whole, our team is better because of these opportunities.


    Taylor was recently certified in School Career Development Advisor (SCDA) Training and can now offer the training through our website in addition to Career Development Training that is offered. Not only is the company investing in Taylor, but she is turning around and adding value to Horizon Point with her unique interests and skills.


    Last but not least Lorrie got to attend the American Correctional Conference in Nashville last month and sent pictures of the songwriter Jelly Roll in our group text message. She said that it was one of the best conferences that she had been to and the experience ties right into Lorrie’s interests. Lorrie holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice and recently received her Master’s of Jurisprudence in Labor and Employment Law at Tulane University Law School.


    Can you see the value of Professional Development? It doesn’t have to be the boring old lectures with stale ideas. If it is done the right way, it brings life to your employees. So go ahead and start asking, “How can I best support you?”
