Nonprofit Board Retreat
Huntsville Young Professionals (HYP) is a nonprofit organization that fosters the growth and development of young professionals in the Greater Huntsville area. Through various community-building activities—civic, recreational, and professional development—HYP serves as a catalyst for creating an engaged and connected network of young professionals.
To strengthen its governance and leadership, HYP partnered with Horizon Point Consulting, Inc. (HPC) in 2024 to facilitate a Board Retreat designed to sharpen leadership effectiveness and map out operating values for the organization.

Board Governance
- Values Mapping Session: HPC facilitated an interactive session to help HYP clarify their core values, ensuring that these values were not only stated but actively lived out by the board members. Key values identified include Community & Connection, Service & Advocacy, and Growth Mindset.
- Leadership Effectiveness: Training was focused on the importance of aligning behaviors with leadership traits. Board members explored the difference between leader emergence and leader effectiveness, discussing how their behaviors impact the organization and community.
- Conflict Resolution and Communication: Through behavioral-based training sessions, board members gained skills in handling difficult conversations and managing conflict effectively.

Daring Leadership Framework
- Horizon Point introduced HYP to the “Daring Leadership” framework, based on Brene Brown’s renowned research and published works, encouraging board members to embrace vulnerability, authenticity, and self-awareness.
- This framework challenged board members to recognize their “armored” behaviors, identify “daring” behaviors, and commit to living out their values in practice.

Tailored, Interactive Approach
- Understanding that each board member brought unique experiences and strengths to the table, Horizon Point customized the training to cater to different learning styles, making it a hands-on and practical experience.
- Participants reflected on their own leadership styles and mapped out how they would show HYP’s values in their actions moving forward.
- The retreat used a combination of small group discussions, leadership assessments, and action planning exercises to ensure high engagement from all participants.
Outcomes
As a result of Horizon Point’s strategic partnership, Huntsville Young Professionals experienced the following outcomes:
- Stronger Alignment with Values: HYP’s board left the retreat with a clear understanding of their core values and how to demonstrate them through their leadership behaviors.
- Improved Leadership Capacity: Board members reported a better understanding of what it means to lead effectively, not just by emerging as leaders but by being intentional about the behaviors they exhibit.
